The glass used to make your windshield is no ordinary glass. It serves a very important role in the function and safety of your vehicle.

Over the years, windshields have been better engineered to increase safety and resilience. They can withstand the regular wear and still be at full strength should an accident occur.

Laminated Glass.

Windshields are like onions,

they have layers.

A windshield is made of laminated glass. Each layer is designed to protect the driver and passengers inside the vehicle. The layers work together to help prevent the windshield from shattering or caving in the event of a crash.

Laminated glass is designed to withstand a slight bend in the event of an impact. In other words: it won’t crack easily.

On most windshields, there is a vinyl lining as the innermost layer. This acts like an adhesive. If the laminated glass is shattered under the pressure of an impact, this layer is designed to prevent dangerous shards of glass from entering the vehicle.

Maintenance.

Even though your windshield’s glass is highly specialized and carefully engineered, it doesn’t require much maintenance to stay that way. If no cracks or chips are sustained, the majority of your windshield’s maintenance needs can be taken care of in a carwash or with the cleaning solution and squeegee.

You may also need to replace the windshield wipers over time or if they get damaged.

Cracks and chips.

The outermost layer of glass has the job to protect the windshield from the inevitable debris cars run into while on the road. If this layer is cracked, no damage is sustained to the rest of the layers.

However, this layer isn’t designed to stay cracked. It is still important to the overall strength of the laminated glass.

It will keep you safe long enough to repair or replace the windshield. If you continue to drive with a cracked windshield, the integrity of the windshield will be compromised and it could be less likely to keep you safe in the event of an accident.

Repair.

While a break or crack on an ordinary piece of glass is no call for immediate concern (unless you don’t want your landlord to know you’ve been playing paintball in your living room again), any breakage in a windshield needs to be fixed as soon as possible.

Your windshield has been specially engineered to provide safety. When it’s been compromised by even a simple rock falling out of a dump truck going slow in front of you, it needs to be inspected by a pro.

When you choose Fast Glass Service to replace or repair your windshield you can expect quick and friendly service. We are a mobile service so we’ll service windshield where is most convenient for you.
